Joseph Eunkwan Choi Biography
Born: Born: South Korea (January 9, 1973) Citizen: USA Languages: Fluent in Korean, Portuguese, English and Spanish Maestro Joseph Eunkwan Choi is in his fourth season as an Assistant Conductor of Owensboro Symphony Orchestra and as Music Director of Owensboro Symphony Orchestras (KY). During past three seasons (2005-2008) Maestro Choi served as Assistant Conductor of Evansville Philharmonic Orchestra and as Principal Conductor of Evansville Philharmonic Youth Orchestra (IN) and Principal Conductor of Evansville Philharmonic Chorus (IN) During 2005-2006 Season, Choi conducted performance of Handel’s “Messiah” with Evansville Philharmonic Orchestra & Chorus which was broadcast on TV and radio stations. His performance of “Messiah” was broadcast on TV and Radio stations during Christmas Day. Also, Wieniawski’s Violin Concerto was performed with John Macfarlane (St. Louis Symphony member) as Violin Soloist with Evansville Philharmonic Youth Orchestra and with Owensboro Symphony Youth Orchestra, toured Louisville in January, 2006 and May, 2006 trip to Indianapolis and very successful East Coast Trip for ten days in June, 2007. During These trips, the OSYO had chance to attend performances of Louisville Orchestra, Indianapolis Symphony and NY Philharmonic Orchestra concerts. Also, Choi has conducted both Evansville Philharmonic Orchestra & Owensboro Symphony Orchestra in many different occasions during this past two seasons and this season he will make his Carnegie Hall Conducting Debut in April, 2008. In the past, he served as an Artistic Director of Maryland Chamber Orchestra, Assistant Conductor of Asheville Symphony and Southern Adventist University Symphony Orchestra. Also, he served as cover conductor for the Phoenix Youth Symphony Orchestra, University of Maryland Symphony Orchestra and guest conducted Phoenix Symphony Orchestra, Scottsdale Symphony Orchestra, East Texas Symphony Orchestra and Daejeon Philharmonic Orchestra in South Korea (with the invitation from Maestro Shinik Hahm, Professor of Conducting at Yale University). Maestro Choi’s guest conducting engagement with Daejeon Philharmonic Orchestra in concert in South Korea was sold-out and received overwhelming response from critics and audiences alike. Also, during his Graduate Studies, he served as an Assistant Conductor of University of Maryland Chorus and Chorale for three years, where he studied Choral Conducting at the University of Maryland at College Park while working toward his Doctor of Musical Arts (DMA). During this time, he also taught conducting courses for music majors and served as full-scholarship Doctoral Graduate Assistant. Maestro Choi received his Masters of Music (MM) with emphasis in orchestral conducting at the University of Hartford’s Hartt School of Music in Connecticut. In the past, Maestro Choi has conducted many fine ensembles which include Bohuslav Martinu Philharmonic, Lisboa Metropolitan Orchestra (Portugal), Jeju Symphony Orchestra (S. Korea), Beethoven Chamber Orchestra, US Army Field Band and Chorus, US Bolling Air Force Band, Knoxville Chamber Orchestra and Symphony Chorus, Western Massachusetts Youth Symphony, Univ. of MD Symphony, and many festival ensembles. His major orchestral conducting studies were with Otto Werner-Mueller, Kirk Trevor, Tsung Yeh and Harold Farberman where he has been a fellow conductor at the Conductor’s Institute in Hartford, Le Forget Music Festival in Canada and Zlin’s International Symphonic Workshop for Domaine Conductor’s in the Czech Republic. In March 2001, Maestro Choi made his conducting debut at the Kennedy Center Concert Hall conducting Debut where his concert was sold out, received rave reviews and was broadcast on the local Prince George County’s Educational Channel. In 2001, Maestro Choi received an invitation from the Korean Conductors Association to be competing in their 1st Conductor’s Competition in late August 2001 and was also one of only 8 conductors from around the world to be invited to compete in Portugal’s Fundação Oriente International Conductor’s Competition in September, 2001. Recently, Maestro Choi was invited to compete in Besançon Conducting Competition and also was a winner of International Conducting Workshop in Macon, Georgia. As a result of this, Maestro Choi was invited to study with Yuri Temirkanov and guest conducted St. Petersburg “Congress” Orchestra in Russia in July and August, 2005. In January 2008, Maestro Choi participated in 2008 Pedrotti International Conducting Competition where he was among 158 conductors from around the world. He is married to Angela Choi (Jin-Hui Jang) and together with their son Nathaniel; they reside in Newburgh, Indiana. (2008-2009) |
